It appears correct that I should prefix to the next biographical sketch, some mention of the good reasons which have made me consider it desirable that I should leave powering me such a memorial of so uneventful a daily life as mine. I do not for a moment visualize that any portion of what I have to relate can be intriguing to the public as a narrative, or as being related with myself. But I have believed that in an age in which education, and its enhancement, are the issue of much more, if not of profounder research than at any former interval of English background, it could be useful that there ought to be some file of an schooling which was unusual and remarkable, and which, no matter what else it might have carried out, has proved how much a lot more than is frequently intended might be taught, and very well taught, in all those early several years which, in the common modes of what is called instruction, are tiny superior than wasted. It has also appeared to me that in an age of transition in opinions, there might be somewhat equally of interest and of advantage in noting the successive phases of any head which was always pressing forward, equally all set to discover and to unlearn both from its individual ideas or from individuals of other people. But a motive which weighs much more with me than both of these, is a motivation to make acknowledgment of the debts which my intellectual and moral improvement owes to other individuals some of them of identified eminence, other individuals much less regarded than they deserve to be, and the one to whom most of all is because of, one particular whom the planet had no prospect of realizing.
