About Me

My name is Peter Hansen. I had been born in Connecticut. I spent the majority of my childhood in Stonington, a small, seaside town around the Connecticut-Rhode Island border. My pops was obviously a commercial fisherman and also since he was from Norway, life around the sea would be a natural for him. My mother would be a housewife. I was the typical '50's family. Most of my childhood was spent round the docks and fishing boats for sale of Stonington. In 1954, my pops plus some with the other fishermen decided to try their luck at shrimping in Brownsville, Texas. Soon after months, and incredibly little success, we returned to Stonington. Most of the Stonington boats were selling their catches in New Bedford, MA, so that it wasn't any surprise that in 1959, we packed up and moved.

New Bedford remained my home through my secondary school years. I graduated from New Bedford Secondary school in 1965. I needed the opportunity to go to college, however chose a hitch within the Navy. Should you recall, during those times, you simply were built with a few choices: head to college, wait to become drafted, enlist or get wed and hope all went well.

After a thrilling ten weeks at NTC Great Lakes and a two weeks leave, I flew to Subic Bay inside the Philippines, capture my ship, the USS Mansfield DD-728. Our main mission was plane guard duty with the carrier USS Kittyhawk. We also alternated three day support fire missions with the other ships within our group over the Vietnam coast or more the Saigon River once or twice. Lots of excitement to have an eighteen yr old kid. There were liberty calls in Hong Kong, Yokosuka, Subic Bay and Pearl Harbor. In June of 1966 I visited CT (Communication Tech) school in Pensacola, FLA. Upon graduation, I had been delivered to Bremerhaven, Germany for just two years roughly. After being discharged from the Navy in 1969, I returned home and met the lady I might end up marrying in April of 1970. We've two grown daughters and four grandchild
