I am Peter Hansen. I used to be born in Connecticut. I spent nearly all of my childhood in Stonington, a small, seaside town about the Connecticut-Rhode Island border. My dad was obviously a commercial fisherman and also since he was from Norway, life on the sea would be a natural for him. My mother would be a housewife. We had been the standard '50's family. A lot of my childhood was spent across the docks and fishing boats of Stonington. In 1954, my father and a few from the other fishermen chose to try their luck at shrimping in Brownsville, Texas. After a couple of months, and incredibly little success, we returned to Stonington. The majority of the Stonington boats were selling their catches in New Bedford, MA, therefore it was no surprise that in 1959, we packed up and moved.
New Bedford remained home through my secondary school years. I graduated from New Bedford Secondary school in 1965. I'd the chance to head to college, however i chosen a hitch within the Navy. In the event you recall, in those days, you only had a few choices: head to college, wait to become drafted, enlist or get wed and hope all went well.
After a thrilling ten weeks at NTC Great Lakes plus a two weeks leave, I flew to Subic Bay within the Philippines, to trap my ship, the USS Mansfield DD-728. Our main mission was plane guard duty using the carrier USS Kittyhawk. We also alternated three day support fire missions using the other ships inside our group along the Vietnam coast and up the Saigon River maybe once or twice. A lot of excitement with an eighteen year old kid. We'd liberty calls in Hong Kong, Yokosuka, Subic Bay and Pearl Harbor. In June of 1966 I went along to CT (Communication Tech) school in Pensacola, FLA. Upon graduation, I had been delivered to Bremerhaven, Germany for 2 years roughly. After being discharged from your Navy in 1969, I returned home and met the girl I might end up marrying in April of 1970. We have two grown daughters and four grandchildren. We live in
